PERINATAL
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) Training 2025
Helping Perinatal Mothers
March 28/29/30
Fri/Sat/Sun
12:00-5:20pm EST
Bonus Day (free for early bird sign-ups): March 31
In this online, comprehensive, interactive IPT training workshop, you will learn the following:
Introduction and Overview:
You will have a chance to practise all the techniques throughout the training.
We will do live demonstrations of some of the techniques and show video vignettes of others, with examples from perinatal patients. We will discuss in the large group as well as in small break-out groups of 2 or 3 so that everyone can get a chance to practise, ask questions, and connect with colleagues. People find this to be a safe and supportive way to learn, and it allows you to leave the workshop ready to use your new skills (with supervision). If it sounds at all daunting to you though or if you wish to be with someone you know, just reach out to me and we will figure out what's best for you.
You will be able to meet and get to know other colleagues in the field of perinatal mental health from around the world and perhaps close to home. We will take time for introductions and will allow for networking opportunities for those who are interested in getting to know others in the field and perhaps for developing your network of like-minded IPTers!
Dates:
The training workshop takes place over 3 days in March 2025 (4 days for those taking part in the bonus day on Monday March 31st). The core training days are from 12 noon - 5:20pm EST (Toronto time zone), and will include some mingling and networking time. The Bonus Day runs from 12 noon - 2:00pm and includes further review, practice, Q&A, helping you find IPT Supervisors in your area, and getting to know your colleagues better.
Certification:
A certificate of completion will be given to those who attend the full training program. Participants can use this towards certification for a Perinatal IPT-A Certificate. With IPT-A certification, you can go on to complete the certification to become an IPT therapist, then supervisor, and trainer.

YOUR PERINATAL IPT TRAINER
Dr. Vivian Polak, HBA, BMedSc, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Polak is a Perinatal Psychiatrist who educates and informs patients and practitioners about psychiatric illnesses and how to help each person achieve remission and overall wellness. It is not just about reducing symptoms. In addition to helping her patients to experience full remission from psychiatric disorders, she aims to help them to fully recover their true selves, to realise satisfying relationships, to overcome self-defeating patterns, and to achieve optimal physical and mental health while minimising the risk of future illness. She developed a keen interest in the psychotherapies during Residency Training - Davanloo's Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, individual and group CBT, and of course IPT. She went on to further her education in Interpersonal Psychotherapy and became certified as a Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer through the IPT Institute. She is currently conducting a Randomised Controlled Trial to compare Group IPT with usual care (including medications, other therapies, and whatever else they choose to access) in women with Postpartum Depression. (Spoiler alert - Group IPT works better!)
In addition to Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Dr. Polak promotes a constellation of evidence-based lifestyle modifications around sleep, exercise, nutrition (a whole food plant-based diet), relaxation practices such as mindfulness and meditation, and social connections, in addition to judicious medication use for those who need it. In her spare time, she loves to spin around the dance floor with her husband at ballroom dance socials and hopes to continue well into old age!
